#WCW– Author Chat & Interview feat. E.S. McMillan

#WCW– Author Chat & Interview feat. E.S. McMillan

It’s the first Wednesday of the month and if you’re a regular reader you know that means it’s time for my monthly chat with a Author Crush of mine. This month I’m talking to E.S. McMILLAN. I’m so excited to share this chat!

With that said… LET’S CHAT!!

Thanks for taking the time to chat today!
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
ESM: I have always been a lover of the written word. I have loved reading since I was a little girl and learned. Being a published author is a fairly new dream of mine. I started out as a personal/virtual assistant to authors and after the prodding (well, shove) from a friend, I took the leap and published my first short story three years ago.

How do you handle writer’s block?
ESM: When I can’t find the words that I need, I usually pick up a book to read or watch tv. I try to find inspiration from others.

What comes first, the plot or characters?
ESM: I come up with a basic plot first and then come the characters. Their names are usually determined by their personality.

Do you prefer writing in silence or to music?
ESM:I do my best writing to music. Each book of mine usually has a playlist that is created in the early stages of my writing.
How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
ESM: I have written 38 books/short stories. I honestly think my favorite is An Old Fashioned Love Story. It was my first solo novella and I just love those characters. Vera and Drayton are very near and dear to my heart.

You’ve written in the YA, NA, and contemporary romance genres. Do you have a preference?
ESM: Contemporary Romance is my favorite!

Which of your books was most enjoyable to write?
ESM: Yes I’m Ready was the most enjoyable for me to write. I loved writing with JA Lafrance. We just flowed. There was no outline or real planning. We just wrote.

If you had to recommend one of your books to a new reader, which would you recommend?
ESM: If I had to recommend one of my books, it would be Faith Under Fire and the story would be The Visit. When I wrote that story, I literally left my heart on the pages. I cried almost the whole time I was writing that story.

Where do you get your inspiration?
ESM: All of my stories are inspired by music or real life.

#WCW– Author Chat & Interview feat. Colleen Hoover

It’s time for my monthly chat with a Author Crush of mine. This month I’m talking to Colleen Hoover and my excitement levels are off the charts!

I’m so excited to share our chat but let me give a little more backstory to my fangirl moment. Back when I didn’t ever think I’d have the courage to publish my own stories, I fell in love with Colleen’s. Not only that, but getting to know her via social media encouraged me to do something I)’d dreamed about since I was a girl filling up notebooks with my made-up worlds and people. I can’t remember which of my books was first (either the Slammed Series or Hopeless) … but that’s only because I literally devoured her backlist.

To this day, Maybe Someday is still my untouchable favorite, yet every release leaves me hanging in expectation of what she’s going to do to my heart next.

Fast forward to being invited to participate in The Bookworm Box with my book Sticks & Stones and then participating in the ONE MORE STEP Anthology — I’m still pinching myself that I had the opportunity to work somewhat adjacent to CoHo.

The entire experience has only added fuel to my dream of being considered an author of heart and caliber as Colleen.

I digress… This chat allowed me a fun opportunity to peek into her process and getting to know the person behind the pen. I’m certain you will feel the same.

With that said… LET’S CHAT!!

Thanks for taking the time to chat today, Colleen!

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

CH: I was four-years-old when my older sister started school. She would come home after learning how to read and she’d write things down. I remember being so jealous that she had this method of communication that I didn’t have. I had all these stories inside of me I wanted to tell and I couldn’t wait to start school and learn how to read and write. Somehow, my love for writing and my need to be a writer started before I even knew how to write!

How do you handle writer’s block?

CH: I like to pretend it doesn’t exist. I call it a “creative lull.” Sometimes I feel creative, sometimes I don’t. I don’t force it. I consume other forms of art, like television, music, reading, etc. Inspiration always seems to build back up when I find a great movie or read a great book. I’m not too hard on myself if I’m unable to write because I think the brain needs breaks. When you’re feeling blocked or uninspired, maybe it’s our brains way of telling us to rest.

What comes first, the plot or characters?

CH: It’s honestly different with every book. Sometimes I’ll get an idea for a character and form a plot around the character, but sometimes I get an idea for a plot twist and I’ll form the entire book around the twist.

Where is your favorite place to write?

CH: I like to switch it up. I have an office a mile from my house, but it can get lonely there. Sometimes I throw on headphones and write at my kitchen table so I can feel like I’m still engaged in the goings-on of my family. Sometimes I need complete solitude and I’ll go rent a hotel for a week. I don’t really have one location. I get bored easily, so my scenery needs to change on a regular basis.

Do you prefer writing in silence or to music?

CH: I need complete silence. I even take the batteries out of my clock. I do love to listen to music to help me feel inspired leading up to a writing day, but if I’m actively writing, I can’t have any interruptions or noise.

How much ‘world building’ takes place before you start writing? I

CH: tend to stick to realistic stories, so I don’t have the type of world building a fantasy book would require. I also LOATHE description. I skip over descriptions of locations when I read, so as I write, I like to leave most of that up to the reader’s imagination. I don’t care what color the walls are, I just want to know what’s going on behind that door and what’s being said!

How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?

CH: I’m not an emotional person, so I find myself pushing my characters to their limits in order for me to actually feel something. I think that’s why the books are referred to as emotional reads. But I do tend to take on the mood of my characters, so I always try to end my writing day on a funny or happy scene. It’s why, even in the saddest scenes, I tend to insert comedy when I can because I like to go home without the character’s feelings weighing me down.

How do you come up with the titles to your books?

CH: I usually have the title before I start writing and they almost always tie into the book. There have been a couple of times where the title has changed during writing, like with my newest, Reminders of Him. I had about ten different titles for that one. And Hopeless was originally called Falling Together. But I mostly settle on a title first and then build the book around the title.

Do you find it more challenging to write the first book in a series or to write the subsequent novels?

CH: I don’t really write series. I have a couple, but they aren’t typical series, they’re just follow-up books that readers asked for. I’m not a fan of cliffhangers, so none of my novels really require the reader to move to the next book to get the full story. Any series I write is more of a bonus, so I do find any follow-ups I do for a book much easier to write than a standalone novel.

You’ve written in the YA, NA, and contemporary romance genres. Do you have a preference?

CH: I think I enjoyed writing thriller the most. I just haven’t come up with another idea that could match Verity, so I’m being very picky about when I write another thriller.

If you were to genre-hop, which genre would you most like to try?

CH: I love to genre-hop. I’ve tried thriller, paranormal, YA, NA, contemporary. But I’d love to write a fantasy!

Which of your books was most enjoyable to write?

CH: I enjoyed both Slammed and Verity for different reasons. Slammed was my first book, so it was 100% fun and unexpected and I didn’t feel any stress because no one was expecting a book from me. I enjoyed Verity because it was so much fun to try something new and get into the head of characters who are nothing like myself.

Where do you get your inspiration?

CH: I feel like it’s more of a question of how do I turn inspiration off because I soak up inspiration from everywhere. I people-watch, I get inspiration from movies and music and reading. I eavesdrop on conversations when I’m out to eat because I find stories in almost everyone I encounter. It’s more a matter of turning off the inspiration in order to focus on one storyline and one set of characters at a time.

If you had to recommend one of your books to a new reader, which would you recommend?

CH: I’d probably recommend It Ends With Us. It’s one of my more popular books and I think it’s the one readers recommend to others the most.

SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT COLLEEN

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

CH: I love watching movies.

What was your dream job when you were younger?

CH:  I wanted to be a writer. My second dream job would be to direct a movie.

What’s your favorite food?

CH: Shrimp! Shrimp anything. Scampi, fried shrimp, grilled shrimp, coconut shrimp. I feel like that shrimp scene in Forest Gump was written for me.

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you?

CH: Hmmm, I grew up on a dairy farm and milked cows every weekend.

The Scoop on

REMINDERS OF HIM

Can you share something about your current book that isn’t in the blurb?

CH: It’s a dual POV from two main characters.

Are there any secrets from the book, you can share with readers?

CH: This book made me cry. I rarely cry when I write. And I don’t think I cried because it’s the saddest book I’ve ever written. I don’t even know if it’s a book that will make readers cry. It’s just a subject that I find very heartbreaking, so it got to me a couple of times.

Do you write while listening to music? If so, what music inspired or accompanied this current book?

CH: I recently started listening to Jason Isbell. I’m not a fan of country music, but his songs If We Were Vampires really helped me with the feel for this book. I mention the song in the book as a little shout out.

What is the future of the characters? Will there be a sequel?

CH: There probably won’t be a sequel because I tend to write standalones, but there’s a side character I’m thinking of writing a book about.

If you had to describe the main character in THREE words, what would those three words be?

CH: Determined. Ashamed. Hopeful.

AUTHOR CRUSHING

Who is your favorite author and why?

CH: I love Emily Henry and Tiffanie DeBartolo. I think their pacing and dialogue are perfect.

What are you reading now?

CH: I’m trying to outline a book right now and I can’t read while I write, so I’m not currently reading anything.

Who is the author you most admire in your genre?

CH: Honestly, I think EL James is a top notch human. She’s seen a world of success that no one I know has even come close to, yet she remains a very humble person and is so interactive with her fans. Not to mention how supportive she is of other authors. She’s someone I’ve looked up to for years because she hasn’t changed at all.

BEFORE I LET YOU GO, HOW ABOUT A RAPID FIRE ROUND?

Would you rather be in a room full of snakes or a room full of spiders?

CH: Spiders

Would you rather have an endless summer or an endless winter?

CH: Endless Winter

Would you rather always be an hour early or be constantly twenty minutes late?

CH: An Hour Early

Tea or Coffee

CH: Neither

Movie or Book

CH: Ummm…script? Is that an option?

Coke or Pepsi

CH: Pepsi!!!

Toilet Paper: Over or Under

CH: I don’t even put it on the holder. It just sits on the back of the toilet.

#WCW– Author Chat & Interview feat. Dee Ellis

It’s the first Wednesday of the month, so you know that means it’s time for a special #WCW – Author Edition

Every month I sit down with an author pal and we talk books, writing, and other random things. This month I’m shining the spotlight on Dee Ellis.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and chat, Dee!

Let’s talk all about your writing style first…

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

DE: I started writing poetry and short stories in junior high, so very young. Never dreamed I could actually do it, but here I am.

How do you handle writer’s block?

DE: I NEVER force it. If the words don’t come, I wait it out. I write down ideas or do author housework [Update website, do back matter, etc] or outline other projects. I wait for the words to come back. Thankfully, they always do.

What comes first, the plot or characters?

DE: Depends on how inspiration hits. Usually for me, the story first. The characters talk themselves to life as the story goes on.

Where is your favorite place to write?

DE: My home office. Makes me feel very professional haha. But I spend a lot of time at my day job writing. Thankfully my job is cool with it.

Do you prefer writing in silence or to music?

DE: Sometimes with music playlists I make just for the stories and sometimes with ambient sounds like rain. That works WONDERS!

How much ‘world building’ takes place before you start writing?

DE: I write PNR as well, so that is a whole world creation before the words start but my current works are all kind of tied together, same towns/area so the worlds are pretty well created.

How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?

DE: Oh man, sometimes I have written something with tears in my eyes. That’s the BEST feeling. I know I’m doing something right then, and that’s a good feels. And I always hope that impacts readers the same way.

How do you come up with the titles to your books?

DE: Titles are a weakness for me. Sometimes it just comes to me and makes sense for the story, sometimes it’s tied to a holiday or overall theme, sometimes its just something fun the characters say or do with one another.

Do you find it more challenging to write the first book in a series or to write the subsequent novels?

DE: Most of mine are series that are standalones, so I think the first one, setting that up, is the most difficult. To set up the characters who will be coming and create the world right. But I love that challenge.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

DE: I think I am sitting at 45? And my favorite changes all the time, but the one closest to my heart is probably End Game. Or Mustang Maverick.

Which of your books was most enjoyable to write?

DE: Well, I love doing them all, but I had fun with my 80s themed one, When I Think of You. So much I think I will do more!

Where do you get your inspiration?

DE: Everywhere! A song, a scene in a movie, dreams. I just had a dream that I think will totally make a great 80s story!

If you had to recommend one of your books to a new reader, which would you recommend?

DE: I would recommend my very first book, Let It Burn, it’s a true show of my style, even though I write a lot of shorts and it’s a bit on the longer side!

Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

DE/; My website has all my current releases and I’m hoping to start updating with blog posts! Website: Dee Ellis Author

What was your dream job when you were younger?

DE: This. This is it, writing books, telling stories.

What’s your favorite food?

DE: Pasta! I could eat just about any kind almost every day. Bad for me, but eh.

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you?

DE: I seem really shy and I AM, but once you get to know me, I never stop talking—always telling stories—and I love everyone.

Can you share something about your current book that isn’t in the blurb?

DE: It is set in a fictional town that I dreamed up called Paris Isle and it will be used in future shorts.

Are there any secrets from the book, you can share with readers?

DE: It’s a single dad story but I wanted to do it with a twist, so it’s not your typical single dad story because people can become parents all kinds of ways.

What is the future of the characters? Will there be a sequel?

DE: There is ALWAYS the option of a sequel or more to come. This is, as all my books are, a HEA but there is always more to tell, including more babies or more happiness!

If you had to describe the main character in THREE words, what would those three words be?

DE: Sweet, Hot, and Daddy!

If your book was going to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it?

What famous author do you wish would be your mentor?

BEFORE I LET YOU GO, HOW ABOUT A RAPID FIRE ROUND?

Would you rather be in a room full of snakes or a room full of spiders?

DE: Spiders!

#WCW — Author Chat & Interview feat. T. Ashley

#WCW — Author Chat & Interview feat. T. Ashley

It’s the first Wednesday of the month, so you know that means it’s time for a special #WCW – Author Edition

If you’re new here, every month I sit down with a fellow author and we talk about books, creating and all sorts of writer life things.

And for this month, I’m shining the spotlight on author T. Ashley!

Let’s get into the chat, shall we?

Thanks for taking the time to chat today!

Let’s talk all about your writing style first…

SB: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

TA: I was always a writer so to speak. Good at writing papers throughout school years. It wasn’t until like seventh grade that I caught the bug. Then high school happened and I just focused on getting out of dodge. It wasn’t until I took a playwriting class in college my sophomore/junior year and my professor basically told me I didn’t need to be doing anything else.

SB: How do you handle writer’s block?

TA: I don’t handle it very well. I just let it run its course. I’m suffering from it big time. I guess I try to figure out what it is that is preventing me from not being able to write and if I can’t fix it, then I just let myself be. It usually is just me putting too much pressure on myself.

SB: What comes first, the plot or characters?

TA: Eight times out of ten – characters.

SB: Where is your favorite place to write?

TA: In bed.

SB: Do you prefer writing in silence or to music?

TA: Definitely with music. There has to be some kind of background noise…usually to distract me from my children.

SB: How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

TA: Four books and featured in one anthology. Oh…my…I would have to say Miss Agnes is Missing. Probably because it’s my newest baby.

SB: Who is your favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them special.

TA: It’s actually a character that I am working on right now. Her name is Celeste and she is from my upcoming book Capturing Celeste. She is giving me the hardest time because she is me on paper. Or who I see myself most like. There is a little bit of all of our characters in us, but she is the one that I had to stop and go: “Oh, okay, Celeste… I see you seeing me.” But she’s special. I like to think I am too.

SB: Which of your books was most enjoyable to write?

TA: Sight Undone. I was free writing that one. It was all me and I only had to listen to my editor on that one. There weren’t any outside influences steering my story in any direction. I could just write and enjoy writing.

SB: Where do you get your inspiration?

TA: My children. Who am I to tell them that they can live their dreams if I’m not living mine? They are a reflection of me and I of them, so I want to be the best me for them to in turn be the best them.

SB: If you had to recommend one of your books to a new reader, which would you recommend?

TA: Miss Agnes is Missing. This one is a good one. I hope to continue this storyline in the future.

SB: How much ‘world building’ takes place before you start writing?

TA: Not much. I’m a pantser so it happens during. Or late at night when I can’t sleep.

SB: How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?

TA: I like to let myself feel as if I was the reader. Because I want them to feel to. And I like to let all the emotions be a big part of my words…or I hope they are. So, I let them happen. I let them sting. I’m a cancer…I can’t help it.

SB: How do you come up with the titles to your books?

TA: They usually come to me in dreams. Titles are my favorite part of the writing process and I almost always have a title before I began writing.

SB: Do you find it more challenging to write the first book in a series or to write the subsequent novels?

TA: The subsequent novels. I put way too much pressure on myself for it to be better than the last. I probably should stop writing series because of this, but I love writing them at the same time. It sucks.

FUN FACTS ABOUT T. ASHLEY

What was your dream job when you were younger?

TA: I wanted to be a Broadway star.

Favorite artist and favorite song?

TA: GooGoo Dolls – Iris

Share something your readers wouldn’t know about you?

TA: I am insanely social awkward and a lot shy.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

TA: Justin Timberlake

Who is your current celebrity crush?

TA: Michael B. Jordan

The Scoop on

CAPTURING CELESTE

SB: Can you share something about your current book that isn’t in the blurb?

TA: Celeste is everything I hope I am and everything I wish to be. This story is about self-discovery, self-love and self-confidence…and a dab of steam…okay, probably a lot of steam.

SB: Are there any secrets from the book, you can share with readers?

TA: Be kind to yourself. That’s the ultimate message.

SB: What was the inspiration for the story?

TA: I am. I was once asked if I could write a character about myself, would I… My initial answer was a sure and confident no. However, me being me, went home and thought about what I would be like on paper. Or who I would hope that would like. Then BAM…this cover came across my screen in a Facebook group. That! That is what I would want someone representing me to look like…the rest is history. Hopefully.

SB: Do you write listening to music? If so, what music inspired or accompanied this current book?

TA: I sure do. Jazmine Sullivan’s latest album Heaux Tales is on repeat. There may be two characters names Jazmine and Sullivan…lol

SB: What is the future of the characters? Will there be a sequel?

TA: My goal is to always write standalones, so I’m not sure. Stories and characters have a mind of their own. Also, there is a character in this book who is in another book of mine…this is something I enjoy doing with my non-paranormal books.

AUTHOR CRUSHING

Favorite book when you were a kid?

TA: Rapture of Cannan by Sherri Reynolds…probably was way too young when I read it, but so good.

Favorite book you’ve read as an adult?

TA: Eek! Don’t make me pick. I will say in the last year the best book I’ve read is Wings of Ebony by J. Elle

What famous author do you wish would be your mentor?

TA: Oof…Terri McMillian, Eric Jerome Dickey (may he rest in peace) and Colleen Hoover. I know…only one, but they all could offer me something different.

BEFORE I LET YOU GO, HOW ABOUT A RAPID FIRE ROUND?

Would you rather be in a room full of snakes or a room full of spiders?

TA: Insert large, shocked eyes emoji…snakes

Would you rather have an endless summer or an endless winter?

TA: Is this a hot hot summer or a cold cold winter? Lol winter

Would you rather always be an hour early or be constantly twenty minutes late?

TA: Early. Being late gives me anxiety.
