It’s the first Wednesday of the month and if you’re a regular reader you know that means it’s time for my monthly chat with a Author Crush of mine. This month I’m talking to E.S. McMILLAN. I’m so excited to share this chat!

With that said… LET’S CHAT!!

Thanks for taking the time to chat today!
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
ESM: I have always been a lover of the written word. I have loved reading since I was a little girl and learned. Being a published author is a fairly new dream of mine. I started out as a personal/virtual assistant to authors and after the prodding (well, shove) from a friend, I took the leap and published my first short story three years ago.

How do you handle writer’s block?
ESM: When I can’t find the words that I need, I usually pick up a book to read or watch tv. I try to find inspiration from others.

What comes first, the plot or characters?
ESM: I come up with a basic plot first and then come the characters. Their names are usually determined by their personality.

Do you prefer writing in silence or to music?
ESM:I do my best writing to music. Each book of mine usually has a playlist that is created in the early stages of my writing.
How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
ESM: I have written 38 books/short stories. I honestly think my favorite is An Old Fashioned Love Story. It was my first solo novella and I just love those characters. Vera and Drayton are very near and dear to my heart.

You’ve written in the YA, NA, and contemporary romance genres. Do you have a preference?
ESM: Contemporary Romance is my favorite!

Which of your books was most enjoyable to write?
ESM: Yes I’m Ready was the most enjoyable for me to write. I loved writing with JA Lafrance. We just flowed. There was no outline or real planning. We just wrote.

If you had to recommend one of your books to a new reader, which would you recommend?
ESM: If I had to recommend one of my books, it would be Faith Under Fire and the story would be The Visit. When I wrote that story, I literally left my heart on the pages. I cried almost the whole time I was writing that story.

Where do you get your inspiration?
ESM: All of my stories are inspired by music or real life.
